I’m a PhD student in the department of Materials Science and Engineering where I am working on materials for medical application. For example materials for hip implants, syringes or reconstructing body parts.
I studied Biomedical engineering as I want to make a difference to people’s lives when they need it the most.
My project in particular works on reconstruction of the pelvic floor. We work with materials that are soft and bouncy like the pelvic floor itself. In particular, my project is about making the surface of those materials more ‘cell-friendly’ so that when you implant the material, the body really likes the prosthesis and you help regeneration.
During the second year of my PhD, I was the Event Officer for the Women in Engineering Society. I was in charge of organising activities such as inspirational talks with engineers in industry, visits to plants like Jaguar Land Rover in Birmingham, and outreach activities like the Big Bang Fair.
